About the Position

Structural/Bridge Inspection Team Leader | Watertown, MA

In this position, you would serve an important lead role in the planning and execution of bridge inspections and the development of bridge load ratings. The role would involve coordinating multiple inspections teams and serving as an inspection Team Leader. The work would involve a mix of office and field work. The ideal candidate should possess a “can-do” attitude, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to work independently as well as with a team in a dynamic, fast-paced, and fun environment. The position includes significant opportunities for personal and professional development and growth within VHB’s emerging bridge inspection practice.


  • Plan, perform, and supervise bridge and ancillary structure inspections in accordance with NBI Standards
  • Completing and reviewing of bridge inspection reports for MBTA, MassDOT, Local Municipalities and other state and local agencies
  • Performing load ratings for structures
  • Supervising and mentoring younger staff
  • Preparing design of bridge repairs
  • Technical oversight and review of inspection reports and load ratings
  • Monitoring of project budgets and schedules

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to work at height and adjacent to live traffic
  • Familiarity with MassDOT, AASHTO, and AREMA design codes
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proactive and self-motived, with excellent attention to detail and quality
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Enthusiasm to learn, seek out opportunities, and take responsibility
  • Ability and willingness to travel (throughout New England), including overnight, as required
  • Rope access credentials are a plus


  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
  • 8+ years of professional bridge inspection and load rating experience
  • Licensed professional engineer (PE) a strong plus
  • Must have passed the NHI/FHWA Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridge course
  • NHI/FHWA Fracture Critical course a strong plus
