About the Position

VHB is seeking a Structural Engineer to join our dynamic and growing Structures group in our Washington, DC or Tysons, VA offices. In this position, you would be involved in the planning, analysis, design, and detailing of bridge and other transportation related structural projects.



  • Perform structural design of highway and/or railroad bridges and ancillary structures
  • Assisting in the field with bridge inspections
  • Prepare preliminary and final design documents for bridge-focused projects
  • Assist in the field with structure inspections
  • Preparation of quantity calculations and cost estimate

Skills & Abilities

  • Must possess strong technical skills
  • Familiarity with bridge design and detailing (steel, concrete, prestressed concrete), and seismic analysis
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Self-motivated and collaborative
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment
  • Excellent attention to detail


  • B.S. in Civil Engineering (structural emphasis preferred)
  • 1-3 years of professional structural engineering experience
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification
  • Possess an understanding of completing engineering studies, design reports, compiling contract documents and developing contract plans, in conformity with accepted engineering standards and procedures including AASHTO and local/regional municipalities and state DOTs
  • Familiarity with structural engineering software (AASHTOWare, LARSA 4D, MDX, SP Column, MerlinDASH, Mathcad, etc.)
  • MicroStation and AutoCAD experience a strong plus
