Senior Communications Manager | Any VHB Office


Under minimal direction, manages internal and/or external communications and visibility of VHB’s employee experience programs. Reporting to the VP of Human Resources, serves as point person/liaison to senior management, HR partners, and People+Culture Team Directors. Plans, directs, and implements communications deliverables for employee communications, including talent acquisition, wellness and benefits, learning and development, compensation, employee culture and engagement in support of VHB’s strategic plan, growth initiatives, and overall goals. Develops and executes strategies and standards for communications programs and ensures objectives are communicated accurately and effectively. Develops and leads communication strategy for talent acquisition program and oversees HR communications programs and other internal communications to improve VHB's employee experience and differentiate the firm as an employer of choice. Plans, prepares, and distributes VHB information using a variety of media and interactive technologies. Directly leads the day-to-day management of communication partners on the People+Culture Team. May have direct reports.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Drives the development and implementation of proactive strategic communications plans and programs in support of VHB’s strategic plan and to inform, educate and engage employees around HR programs and policies, and the physical, financial, intellectual, and wellness resources and benefits we provide.
  • Working with Talent Acquisition Team and VHB leadership, defines a strategy for building, amplifying, and measuring VHB’s external employer brand to attract and recruit from a diverse pool of candidates.
  • Leads in partnership with Development+Strategy Team the development of talent acquisition communication strategies for talent acquisition pipeline activities.
  • Highlights key media outlets, conferences, events, and/or other internal and external visibility platforms that VHB should be engaged in as it relates to employee engagement, culture, and employer brand.
  • Manages People+Culture Team communications team members, including hiring, mentoring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; coaching and motivating; and addressing problems.
  • Collaborates with local leadership and regional communications specialists to direct the focus and content for internal and external communications pieces and other visibility efforts (e.g., employee engagement activities and programs, employee-focused materials, communication pieces) to ensure consistency in messaging across the firm.
  • Directs the research and monitoring activities of web-based media and other outlets as they relate to industry trends and follows current events and trends and anticipates the potential needs of employees to keep them informed and engaged.
  • Determines and/or approves strategic placement of highly visible internal and external communications.
  • Directs and oversees content development, communications campaigns, industry event identification, planning, engagement strategies, media relations, award submittals, and other key activities that maximize overall visibility and prominence in the marketplace and elevates the overall employee experience.
  • Develops press releases, memos, organizational missions, and other internal or external communications as needed.
  • Provides communications coaching and support to regions, marketing teams, and others.
  • Ensures VHB’s brand and voice standards are consistently applied across all VHB footprint.
  • Maintains relationships with media and other industry professionals.
  • Participates in professional and personal development aligned with career goals.
  • Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and VHB policies and procedures.

Skills & Knowledge

  • In-depth knowledge of trending digital marketing and communications platforms, and ability to leverage analytics to enhance audience engagement.
  • Strong understanding of Human Resources programs and policies.
  • Experience developing and executing communication strategy to strengthen employer brand to attract and recruit.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to write for various platforms (i.e., print, web, social media).
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into layman terms.
  • Exceptional employee communications, public relations, and strategic storytelling skills.
  • Persuasive communication skills.
  • Ability to align creative and compelling messaging with media and audience.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality.
  • Excellent editing skills.
  • Ability to identify and seek needed information/research skills.
  • Team oriented with ability to perform multiple tasks independently in a timely manner and collaborate effectively and positively with coworkers.
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented.
  • Demonstrated ability to move projects forward.
  • Connections with AEC trade publications and media preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10-12+ years of experience leading and supporting marketing communications  (AEC industry preferred)
  • 3 years of supervisory or leadership experience
  • BA in Public Relations, Marketing, English, Communications, Journalism, or related discipline

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in New York City is $118,000-165,000. The offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience and work location.
