Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB’s Virginia Beach, VA office is seeking a Senior Transportation Highway Engineer to join our Transportation Design team.

 

Duties include highway and drainage design, development of traffic control plans, cost estimating, right-of-way, and construction plans and a leadership role in project/task management. Business development including client collaboration, development, and relationship building to develop Clients for Life. Our multi-disciplined team uses its skills and experience to improve our communities with a sustainable, context driven, and integrated project delivery mindset. Our clients include VDOT, NPS, counties, municipalities, and other state and federal agencies, and private partners who support the development of the places we live, work, recreate and learn.

 

 Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering related duties as a lead project engineer including analysis and design on complex transportation projects, grading, stormwater management, erosion control, and plan preparation
  • Lead production of design deliverables including plan preparation, construction documents, specifications, estimates, reports, and technical memorandums
  • Client presentations to discuss project goals, challenges, and solutions
  • Lead and/or be part of a multi-discipline design team, including coordination with subconsultants
  • Collaborate with technical specialists to resolve technical and coordination issues
  • Field work for design and construction projects, as necessary
  • Employ QC/QA best practices, in compliance with VHB and client standards
  • Deliver related services associated with the construction bidding process and active construction
  • Lead and/or be part of a multi-disciplined team in business development activities including proposal development, presentations, scope of work, and fee development

Skills/Abilities

  • AutoCAD with Civil 3D Corridor experience and/or MicroStation with Geopak or Open Roads experience required.
  • Ability to lead multiple concurrent projects and willingness to serve in a variety of roles within a design team
  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills for project and business development
  • Capability to lead/mentor junior and project level staff
  • Adept at technical task management, oversight, and collaboration with other disciplines
  • Management of project scope and budgets
  • Aptitude for presentations and public speaking internally, externally, and publicly

Qualifications

  • BS in Civil Engineering, MS preferred
  • 8+ years of professional transportation engineering experience
  • 11+ years of professional transportation engineering experience preferred
  • PE license in VA strongly preferred or be able to obtain within a year
  • Virginia Advanced Work Zone TCDS, VA a plus
  • Experience with VDOT funded project programs a plus
  • Must have valid driver’s license, as the position requires travel to client meetings and project sites
