Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB's Metro DC office is seeking a Transit & Rail Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate has the flexibility to work in a hybrid capacity from VHB's offices in Tysons, VA, Washington DC,  or Raleigh, NC. 

 

The Transit & Rail Engineer will be part of a design team supporting a variety of railroad, rail transit, and bus transit projects.  The candidate should have an interest in the railroad and/or rail transit industries and a desire to grow in the business.  Course work and/or any expertise or experience in railroad, rail transit, or bus transit design is a plus.

Responsibilities 

  • Assist VHB team on high-profile projects like:
    • Preliminary Engineering for the $2B Long Bridge railroad project between Arlington, VA and Washington, DC 
    • Final Design of VRE Crystal City Station in Arlington, VA 
    • Final Design of VRE L’Enfant Station in Washington, DC
    • Preliminary Engineering for CC2DCA multimodal bridge connection project in Arlington, VA 
    • Arlington County Metro Crystal City East Entrance Design-Build as well as several other high-profile transit and rail projects along the same corridor 
  • Engineering efforts include supporting all aspects of project management, fieldwork, and design 
  • Perform civil design on a variety of rail projects including track structure and drainage, alignment geometry, grade crossings, stations, layover facilities, and maintenance of equipment (MOE) and maintenance of way (MOW) yards
  • Support the Project Development process including preparation of conceptual level designs and supporting documentation
  • Develop specifications, cost estimates, and project schedules
  • Prepare technical reports and analyses
  • Assist in the development of construction bid documents
  • Provide design support services during construction

Skills and Attributes 

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and analytical skills
  • Comfortable working independently as well as on a team 
  • Strong capability in the use of computer applications including MS Office Suite
  • Experience with the AutoCAD and/or Microstation platform is preferred 
  • Desire to learn railroad and rail transit design requirements including AREMA
  • Basic familiarity with track, station, layover facility and general civil engineering

Qualifications

  • 1+ years of engineering experience (3+ years preferred may include extensive co-op/internship experience)
  • BS in Civil Engineering
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification preferred
