Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Modeler/Planner will work our Southeast teams (Atlanta, Orlando, Gulf Coast) to assemble and prepare data for model validation and long-range future year travel forecasts; conduct model validation to required accuracy standards; and prepare the documentation. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Establishes budgets. Monitors project progress for technical accuracy and adherence to schedule and budget.
  • Reviews complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance.
  • Analyzes complex design problems. Devises new approaches, techniques, and procedures to problems encountered and coordinates various technical aspects of work.
  • Represents VHB at meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to establish needs and discuss design/permitting issues.
  • Responsible for assigned client relationships, visibility, and business development. Identifies and develops new project opportunities.
  • Mentors junior team members. May supervise, plan, schedule, and coordinate the work of junior employees. Provides guidance to technical team members and reviews their work for accuracy.
  • Participates in professional and personal development aligned with career goals.
  • Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and VHB policies and procedures.
  • Extracts and organizes data on complex projects.
  • May perform complex analysis of spatial data using GIS technology (e.g., buffering, spatial overlays, distance calculations)
  • May research and corrects complex problems with data using spatial and logical analyses.
  • May convert GIS data to and from CAD software format on complex projects.

Skills & Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures in civil engineering.
  • Broad knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing site design.
  • Robust technical and critical thinking skills.
  • Skilled in industry standard engineering design and analysis systems (e.g., GIS, travel demand models, traffic simulation).
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite.Ability to use data transformation software to import and export data for use by the engineering team on complex projects
  • Ability to perform sub area validation and able to write scripts to obtain needed specialized model outputs
  • Ability to present modeling results for various stakeholders/clients, and model user groups
  • Considerable skill in the use of GIS software, particularly the Esri ArcGIS platform is preferred
  • Well-developed skill in applying GIS technology to solve difficult analytical problems is preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relational database management systems and the ability to use the SQL language is preferred
  • Ability to automate repetitive tasks using Python on complex projects is preferred

Minimum Requirements:

  • 8-11 years of engineering experience, depending on level of education
  • BS in Civil Engineering (a master’s degree may be substituted for 2 years of experience)
  • PE licensure
  • Experience with travel demand modeling software, such as Cube Voyager, TransCAD, and PTV VISUM
  • Technical writing skills and technical presentation skills
  • Experience in managing and editing geospatial databases is preferred
  • Programming experience with at least two of the following: Microsoft Visual Studio, SQL, Angular is preferred
  • Understanding of Esri software, such as ArcGIS Pro, FieldMaps, Survey123, ArcGIS Online and Portal is preferred
  • Experience in publishing and developing web applications within ArcGIS Online and/or Portal is preferred
  • Experience with GIS and database analysis including developing scripts to process data in and out of GIS files or automated routines in ArcGIS is preferred
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Python, R, JavaScript, and/or Rubypreferred is preferred
