Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

Archaeology Crew Chief

 

Under moderate supervision, performs assignments that require the application of archaeological survey and testing techniques, and procedures. Exercises independent judgment utilizing scientific principles, practical logistics, and best field personnel management practices. Leads field crews in the collection of archaeological data and works within an overall environmental team to assist with the preparation of environmental documents. Identifies, tests, and mitigates archaeological resources. This position requires frequent travel to location and potentially working in various weather conditions and terrains. Applicants can expect up to 80% field deployment per year as part of this position. Travel may include overnight stays. Single occupancy and per diem reimbursement are provided. Deployments may range from 5 to 10 days on site.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts Phase I, II, and III archaeological surveys.
  • Prepares field survey and geographic maps using ESRI software, including data preparation in Survey123 and Field Maps Apps.
  • Ensures field survey maps are accurate and are accessible to crews prior to survey. Manages the post-field data curation.
  • Provides artifact analysis and assists in curation efforts when needed.
  • Conducts archival and historical background research.
  • Responsible for the accurate recording of in-field geographic data
  • Supervises and mentors field technicians. Provides quality control for field survey
  • Provides support and technical assistance to the archaeological team.
  • Participates in professional and personal development aligned with career goals.
  • Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and company policies and procedures.
  • May Prepare technical reports under the supervision of a Principal Investigator.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A./B.S.) in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field
  • Completion of an accredited archaeological field school, preferably in North America
  • 1-3 years archaeological field experience with a range of field methodologies, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • The ability to travel to a location, walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for long hours, in inclement weather or rugged terrain
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Practical knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental compliance laws (e.g., NEPA, FHWA, NEPA compliance, ARPA, NHPA, NAGPRA, Clean Waters Act).
  • Proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, Survey123, and other ESRI software.
  • Team oriented with ability to perform multiple tasks independently in a timely manner and collaborate effectively and positively with coworkers.
  • Self-motivated, highly organized and detail oriented.
