ABOUT THE POSITION

Environmental Scientist/Project Manager  

 

VHB’s Bedford, NH office is looking for an Environmental Scientist/Project Manager to join our growing Natural Sciences Team working to deliver projects for our energy, transportation, and land development clients across New England. The ideal candidate will have previous experience with managing environmental permitting efforts, project environmental compliance monitoring, and have competency in conducting and managing natural resource field work such as wetland delineation.  

 

Responsibilities 

  • Performs natural resource surveys that may include wetland delineations and functional assessments, soil mapping, wildlife habitat evaluations, vernal pool assessments, and rare species surveys.
  • Manages scientific environmental analysis, natural resource studies and permitting work for large and/or highly complex projects.
  • Oversees development of federal, state, and local environmental permit applications, environmental impact statements and assessments, and planning and zoning studies.
  • Conducts environmental monitoring during project construction to ensure permit compliance and prepare inspection reports.
  • Maintains ongoing dialogue with clients to keep them apprised of project status, changes in conditions or other key points of information (client management).
  • Attends meetings with federal and state regulatory agencies and local municipalities to present projects.
  • Determines client requirements and supervises specifications, instructions, and related documents.
  • Mentors and provides direction and guidance to junior team members, and reviews their work for technical accuracy, thoroughness, and timeliness.
  • Establishes budgets. Monitors project progress for technical accuracy and adherence to schedule and budget.
  • Prepares proposals and/or contracts. Determines client requirements and develops plans, specifications, drawings, instructions, cost estimates, reports, final bid packages, and related documents. Makes recommendations on project staffing and may solicit and evaluate bids.

Skills and Attributes

  • Advanced knowledge of state and federal wetland regulations, land use environmental regulations and environmental permitting. 
  • Advanced skills in project and client relationship management and collaborative problem solving with stakeholders, clients, and teammates. 
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication and oral presentation skills. 
  • Exceptional attention to details, planning and quality. 
  • Highly motivated and team oriented with strong capability to motivate others. 
  • Must demonstrate superior ability in collaborative problem-solving with stakeholders, clients, and colleagues. 
  • Experience in managing project budgets, schedule, and deliverables, and working closely with other teammates. 
  • Experience in identifying northeast plant species, soils, and natural communities. 

Qualifications 

  • 8-11 years of professional environmental consulting experience with at least 2 years involving energy projects and environmental permitting required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Soil Science or related field of study required
  • Master’s degree a plus (may substitute for 1 year of experience)
  • Related certifications such as NH Certified Wetland Scientist, Certified Soil Scientist and or Certified Professional in Sediment and Erosion Control is preferred, or the ability to obtain such certifications within one year
  • OSHA 40 hr. HAZWOPER certification and annual refresher certifications required for site investigation & remediation services is a plus
  • Valid driver’s license required
