ABOUT THE POSITION
VHB is seeking a Transportation Designer to join our growing Transportation Systems Group in New England. This role can be based out of our Watertown, MA or Boston, MA offices.
Project work will focus on the planning, design and construction support of traditional and advanced traffic signals, connected vehicle and smart technology initiatives, advanced transportation technology infrastructure and traditional and smart work zone design and implementations.
Responsibilities
- Work within a team of professionals to develop design plans and specifications for a variety of Transportation Systems and communication equipment & infrastructure
- Development of Traffic Signal Design Plans and Specifications for state and municipal clients
- Development of Temporary Traffic Control Plans (TTCP), including traditional and smart work zones and construction phase service planning for state, municipal and private clients
- Systems Engineering documents for transportation technology projects following the FHWA Systems Engineering Process
- Design of ITS equipment and communications infrastructure including fiber optic and wireless technologies, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Wrong Way Vehicle Detection Systems, and various sensor technologies
- Perform engineering field work as needed (various field equipment testing, utility and infrastructure verification, taking measurements and pictures at field sites, etc.)
- Writing technical reports and memoranda
Skills and Attributes
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Technical Report Writing experience preferred
- Attention to detail
- Excel in working in a team environment
- Ability to read and comprehend design and construction specifications and plans preferred
- Ability/willingness to work outdoors on occasion on highway job sites and uneven terrain
- AutoCAD and/or Microstation preferred
Qualifications
- BS in Civil Engineering with a focus on Transportation or Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- 0+ years of professional experience with a desire to learn the planning, design, and construction of transportation equipment and/or communications systems (cellular, fiber, wireless) preferred
- Interest in working across multiple disciplines concurrently with a diversity of assignments
- Experience developing civil design and construction documents – preference given for state DOT experience, a plus
- EIT preferred
- Valid driver’s license and ability/willingness to travel on occasion
