ABOUT THE POSITION
Urban Planner/Designer | Hybrid | New York, NY
Urban Planner/Designer based in our New York City, NY office. The successful candidate will join our growing practice, working on project development and execution for both public and private projects. The position offers and opportunity for involvement in a range of exciting projects in New York City and throughout the metro region.
The Planning Team in the New York City office provides expertise in environmental planning, entitlements and approvals, transportation planning, urban strategy, and urban technology. We are looking to expand our team with a curious and enthusiastic planner who has a strong curiosity about the built environment, technical confidence in using analytical and design tools, and a holistic approach to complex urban issues.
Responsibilities
The types of projects you can expect to work on will include a range of planning and some design work, from zoning analysis and transportation planning to public outreach and interdisciplinary coordination with engineers and subject matter experts. Clients will include the public sector, private sector, and institutions.
- Evaluating project sites relative to zoning, environmental constraints, transportation, social and economic conditions, and other factors
- Conducting needs assessments
- Gathering, compiling and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data and providing meaningful insights on demographic, housing, economic, social, physical, transportation-based, community-driven, and environmental data affecting land use and development
- With other team members, creating, drawing, and designing concept-level plans, including urban frameworks
- Researching and interpreting policy plans, zoning, and land use regulations
- Preparing written technical planning documents and reports in conformance with codes, plans, and regulations
- In collaboration with other team members, supporting public outreach efforts. Prepare, support, and deliver overview and technical presentations for meetings and other informational materials for stakeholder groups, including the public. Prepare, coordinate, facilitate, and document public involvement and consensus-building meetings, presentations, and workshops.
- Coordinating and communicating with other disciplines at VHB, external consultants, regulatory agencies, clients, and internal and external project team members to advance projects in an accurate and timely manner
- Supporting and working with a multi-disciplinary team including civil engineers, environmental scientists, operations analysts, and market analysts
- Staying abreast of industry changes, policies, procedures, legislation, and technology
- Analyzing project task needs, changes, and enhancements, and making recommendations
Skills and Abilities
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented
- Curiosity in the built environment and flexibility to work on various planning team tasks
- Ability to think critically and strategically in solving problems and devising approaches
- Ability to prepare presentation materials (including graphics and maps) and present in team and public meetings
- Strong writing skills with a demonstrated ability to synthesize complex information concisely and summarize clearly, for both technical and non-technical audiences
- Excellent visual communicator (ability to develop maps, graphics, and effective and clear presentation materials and deliverables)
- Comfort and enthusiasm to collaborate and work in team environment on multi- and inter-disciplinary teams, across disciplines
- Knowledge of New York City projects, including analysis and insight into the New York City Zoning Code and local agencies desired
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in planning or related field (e.g., Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, Urban Design/Studies, Regional Planning, Transportation Planning or studies), Master’s a plus
- 3 - 5 years professional planning experience required
- Proficiency in Arc-GIS, Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office suite (strong in Excel) required
- Grasshopper, Auto-CAD, statistics, visualization software and scripting software experience preferred
Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in New York, NY is $79,000 to $97,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
