ABOUT THE POSITION
VHB’s Hauppauge, New York office is seeking a Community Planner to join our growing community development planning team. The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of a Senior Project Manager applying their diverse knowledge of planning principles and practices to VHB’s planning, and community development projects.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the coordination of program administration and project management for community planning and economic development projects.
- Participate in the preparation of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) required plans and reports.
- Participate in the preparation of environmental impact statements and assessments pursuant to the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), planning and zoning studies, and visual impact analyses.
- Participate in the coordination and preparation of local, state, and federal permits for real estate, institutional, transportation, energy, and state and local government projects.
- Assist in the coordination of stakeholder outreach and engagement, including public meetings, federal, and state agency consultation and coordination, and public comment-response tracking.
- Conduct site visits and data collection, qualitative and quantitative environmental planning analyses, land use analyses, and historic resources research in support of environmental and planning documents.
- Assist Project Managers in project scope development, cost estimation, staff resource identification, implementation oversight, budget tracking, and completion of project management administrative requirements, including preparation of schedules, quality plans, and work plans.
- Develop supporting figures and mapping for various projects using GIS.
Skills and Attributes
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent analytical skills, proficiency with qualitative and quantitative research methods
- Highly organized
- Excel in working in a team environment
- Familiarity with grant funding programs such as Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and/or grant writing experience a plus
- Understanding or experience with SEQRA, NEPA, land use regulations, and sustainability planning is a plus
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to make maps with GIS is a plus
- Capable of balancing and performing multiple tasks/projects in a professional environment
Qualifications
- 3-5 years required, 5-8 years preferred, of professional environmental or community planning, and/or permitting experience
- Minimum BA in Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, or related area of study relevant to specialization (e.g., Urban Design/Studies, Regional Planning, Sustainability Planning, Economics, Urban Transportation Planning)
- Willingness to travel as needed to support projects throughout the region (Long Island, NYC, and Hudson Valley)
Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in Hauppauge, New York is $77,000 - $100,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
