ABOUT THE POSITION
VHB is looking for a Water Resources Engineer to join our dynamic Charlotte or Raleigh, NC offices and play a key role in advancing our stormwater, hydrology, and hydraulics work. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to contribute to impactful projects, including flood analysis, culvert and bridge design, roadway and greenway drainage, and resiliency initiatives.

Responsibilities
- Work with a team of water resource and interdisciplinary professionals to provide technical analysis and evaluations and develop cost-effective innovative solutions for a variety of water resource projects.
- Perform engineering field surveys to collect drainage flow pattern data necessary for modeling, analysis, and documentation of existing conditions.
- Design and develop computations for storm drains, erosion and sediment control, and traditional and innovative green stormwater management infrastructure.
- Assist in the drainage and erosion control design for Linear projects including roadways, rail, and bike-ped facilities.
- Assist in preparing hydrologic and hydraulic studies to support floodplain management, culvert and bridge design, and stream restoration design.
- Prepare stormwater management system, culvert and natural system design drawings and specifications.
- Assist in development of watershed and stormwater master plans.
- Assist in the design and development of wet utility relocation plans.
- Assist in preparing technical reports, plans and specifications.
- Collaborate with senior staff in both technical and professional aspects.
- Attend meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to establish their needs and discuss engineering design/permitting issues.
- Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, aerial photography and other topographical or geologic data for pre-design documentation.
- Assist in designing projects in accordance with client specifications and guidelines, using design software and drawing tools.
- Perform engineering computations related to site hydrology and hydraulics, stormwater BMPs, and natural channel design structural components.
- Develop construction cost estimates and quantities.
- Assist with the preparation of design engineering plans and specifications for approval by state, municipalities and regulatory agencies.
- Stormwater modeling of large watersheds and small sub-basins.
- Promote the application of newest technologies (GIS/ORD/Civ3D, Automation etc.).
- Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality.
Skills And Abilities
- Experience with hydrology and hydraulics calculations and modeling is highly desirable.
- Experience with wet utility design (water/sewer) is a plus!
- Experience preparing design plans & specifications and preparing technical reports.
- Experience with relevant software including Open Roads Designer, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, and HY-8, HydroCAD, StormCAD, SWMM, Microsoft Word and Excel is preferred.
- Knowledge of the North Carolina regulatory processes and NCDOT Hydraulics Unit guidelines is desired.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Team-oriented with strong capability to work independently and motivate others.
- Must demonstrate superior ability in collaborative problem solving with stakeholders, clients, and teammates.
- Highly organized and capable of coordinating and performing multiple tasks.
Qualifications
- BS in Civil/Environmental/Water Resources engineering or related discipline.
- 1-3 years of professional water resources engineering and analysis experience; 3-5 years of experience preferred.
- EIT certification preferred.
