ABOUT THE POSITION

Join VHB's Growing Transportation Team in Orlando, Florida as a Highway Design Engineer!

VHB is seeking a talented and motivated Highway Engineer to join our expanding Transportation practice in Orlando, Florida. As a key member of our dynamic team of transportation planners and engineers, you will have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of public, private, and institutional projects across various sectors, including real estate, municipal, state agencies, higher education, federal lands, and aviation.

You’ll collaborate with clients such as FDOT, local governments, and private developers to create vibrant spaces where people live, work, learn, and recreate.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver transportation projects from study through construction administration.
  • Develop highway and roadway designs, including geometric layout, grading, superelevation, drainage, utilities, and environmental permitting.
  • Prepare roadway design plans following FDOT FDM guidelines, assembling deliverables as per the FDOT CADD Handbook.
  • Develop engineering cost estimates, quantity calculations, and reports using Quantity Manager.
  • Collaborate with project engineers to create 3D models using Open Roads Designer.
  • Assist in the development of temporary traffic control, typical sections, pavement design, and right-of-way/easement plans.
  • Manage technical design and specification documents for projects.

Skills & Abilities

  • Experience with Open Roads Designer preferred (AutoCAD experience a plus).
  • Familiarity with state and local government transportation planning is a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop 3D models or willingness to learn.
  • Proficient in quickly acquiring new skills, multitasking, and following instructions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 3-5 years of professional transportation engineering experience with a focus on roadway design (5-8 years preferred).
  • Engineer in Training certification or ability to obtain within 6 months; PE license preferred.
