Senior Transportation Engineer - Traffic Operations & Safety | Charlotte, NC (Hybrid options available)

We are seeking a Senior Transportation Engineer to become an integral part of our dynamic Traffic Operations group. In this role, you will work alongside a talented team of engineers and planners on a wide range of public and private projects across municipal, state, federal, and institutional sectors. Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Task Manager or Project Manager for a variety of traffic engineering, transportation planning, and safety projects. You will be responsible for overseeing project schedules, budgets, and deliverables, ensuring high-quality results.
  • Lead the preparation of traffic impact studies (TIA), traffic operational analysis, and safety studies for intersections, corridors, and urban streetscapes. Provide strategic recommendations for operational improvements and safety enhancements.
  • Oversee traffic signal design projects, including the application of timing, phasing, and operations strategies that improve traffic flow and safety at signalized intersections.
  • Conduct and lead Road Safety Audits (RSAs) and crash reduction studies. Identify key contributing factors to crashes and propose effective countermeasures to improve safety across various transportation facilities.
  • Use and integrate traffic modeling and simulation software such as Synchro, SIDRA, VISSIM, and TransModeler to perform analyses of traffic operations, predict future conditions, and optimize intersection performance.
  • Manage relationships with key clients, stakeholders, and government agencies (NCDOT, SCDOT). Prepare and present technical reports, project proposals, and presentations to various stakeholders.
  • Work closely with interdisciplinary teams including planners, designers, and other engineers to integrate Complete Streets concepts and multimodal transportation solutions that balance the needs of all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit users.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and planners, providing technical leadership and fostering a collaborative team environment. Support professional development and growth within the team.
  • Utilize, Microstation and AutoCAD to support design, analysis, and reporting tasks.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Experience in traffic signal design and operations, including timing and phasing strategies.
  • Proven experience in traffic safety studies, including Road Safety Audits (RSAs), Traffic Impact Studies (TIA), crash analysis, and safety countermeasures.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, client relationships, and deliverables while meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and concise technical reports and presentations.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and applying Complete Streets principles to transportation solutions.
  • Knowledge of local and state traffic operations and policies (NCDOT, SCDOT, etc.).
  • Ability to mentor and guide junior engineers and foster a collaborative team environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5-8+ years of professional experience in traffic/transportation engineering.
  • Experience with NCDOT or SCDOT projects is highly preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in North Carolina required (South Carolina PE is a plus or ability to obtain within 6 months).
  • Experience with Synchro, SIDRA, MicroStation and AutoCAD preferred; Experience with VISSIM and TransModeler a plus.
  • Project management experience preferred.
