Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Designer
Richmond, VA | Williamsburg, VA | Virginia Beach, VA
VHB is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Designer to join our dynamic Transportation Technology Group in the Mid-Atlantic Region. In this role, you'll contribute to cutting-edge projects involving the planning, design, and construction support of critical ITS infrastructure, including power and communications systems that support smarter, safer, and more connected transportation networks.
This opportunity is available in any of our Mid-Atlantic regional VHB offices located in Richmond, VA, Williamsburg, VA, or Virginia Beach, VA. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in the development of traffic signal and ITS/Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) design plans
- Conduct analysis and support the documentation of electrical power and communication system requirements
- Contribute to the preparation of construction documents, including technical specifications, detailed drawings, and cost estimates
- Perform field work such as site assessments, data collection, and verification of existing conditions
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including transportation planners, traffic engineers, and system integrators to ensure cohesive project delivery
- Participate in QA/QC processes to ensure design accuracy and compliance with applicable standards
- Engage with local and state transportation agencies to support project coordination, permitting, and stakeholder communications
- Stay current with evolving ITS technologies, standards, and best practices to contribute to innovative project solutions
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Proficient in data analysis tools, particularly Excel
- Working knowledge of design software such as OpenRoads Designer (ORD), MicroStation, and AutoCAD
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong team player with the ability to also self-direct when needed
- Eager to learn, grow, and contribute to both technical and strategic aspects of project delivery
- Capable of managing multiple assignments in a deadline-driven environment
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Systems, or Electrical Engineering; focus in the Transportation field a plus
- 1–3+ years of relevant experience in ITS or transportation engineering, with exposure to the design and/or construction of ITS equipment and communication systems (cellular, fiber, wireless)
- Demonstrated interest in multidisciplinary work and varied project assignments
- Experience preparing civil design and construction documentation, preferably for state Departments of Transportation (DOTs)
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel occasionally for field work or project meetings
