ABOUT THE POSITION

Northeast Region Transportation Planning Lead


VHB is seeking a strategic and experienced Northeast Region Transportation Planning Lead to drive the growth, excellence, and innovation of our transportation planning services across the Northeast region. This leadership role offers the opportunity to shape transformative projects that serve local communities, transportation infrastructure, and regional systems—from complex multimodal hubs and stations to inclusive neighborhood revitalization efforts.

 

The successful candidate will bring a strong foundation in urban and transportation planning, experience navigating public and private partnerships, collaborating with key stakeholders, and a passion for delivering infrastructure that improves quality of life and economic vitality across diverse communities.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide visionary leadership for VHB’s regional transportation planning practice across the New York City metropolitan area, including NYC, Long Island, Hudson Valley and New Jersey.
  • Guide strategic planning, stakeholder engagement and project delivery.
  • Advance strategic goals in alignment with VHB’s corporate and regional vision.
  • Foster a collaborative, connected, and inclusive team culture across service lines and markets.
  • Oversee business development efforts, client engagement, and proposal strategy.
  • Evaluate and expand transportation planning services, overall transportation market services, and cross market services (Real Estate, Institutional, State & Local, Energy, and Federal) to align with market needs and industry trends.
  • Drive innovation through the integration of data, technology, and sustainable practices in project execution.
  • Ensure high standards of quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) and regulatory compliance across all projects.
  • Lead staff development through recruiting, mentoring, performance evaluation, and professional growth planning.
  • Promote thought leadership and maintain strong technical credibility in the transportation planning field.
  • Manage budgets and oversee deployment of resources for major projects and pursuits.
  • Monitor industry trends and regulatory changes, ensuring team awareness and responsiveness.
  • Represent the firm in regional industry organizations, events, and professional forums.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 15 years of professional experience in transportation planning or a related discipline within the AEC industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree in transportation planning, civil engineering, urban planning, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Demonstrated success leading multidisciplinary teams and regional initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local transportation regulations, funding programs, and policy initiatives.
  • Professional certification or licensure (AICP, PE, or equivalent) preferred.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships and lead major pursuits.
  • Advanced skills in project delivery, team leadership, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to inspire, influence, and align teams at all levels.
  • High degree of self-motivation, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the Northeast (NY & NJ) as needed to support clients and staff.

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in New York City is $200,000-$250,000. This offer is determined based on a number of job-related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
