ABOUT THE POSITION

Planning and Landscape Architecture Team Leader | Raleigh, NC

 

VHB’s Raleigh office is actively seeking a visionary Planning and Landscape Architecture Team Leader in Raleigh, NC to lead the strategic growth of our Landscape Architecture practice in the Triangle region, with a focus on institutional work. This is a unique leadership opportunity to build and shape a business around you, growing a high-performing team and leading impactful projects from day one.

 

We are looking for a practice builder—a professional with the talent, drive, and experience to grow a portfolio that complements and enhances the strength of our established practices across the region. Your leadership will help expand our presence across higher education, healthcare, and other institutional markets in the Raleigh-Durham area and beyond.

 

Responsibilities

  • Lead, grow, and elevate the Raleigh Planning and Landscape Architecture practice, starting with project leadership and evolving into full team leadership.
  • Drive business development efforts focused on institutional clients (higher education, healthcare, public sector, etc.).
  • Serve as a Senior LA, Planner, and PM for complex, high-visibility projects.
  • Oversee all phases of design and implementation, from site planning to construction documentation.
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire staff, with a path toward building a full Landscape Architecture team.
  • Collaborate closely with VHB’s multi-disciplinary teams across the East Coast.
  • Represent the firm with clients, in communities, and at industry events.
  • Visionary leadership in design, business development, and project execution.
  • Acting as the go-to expert in institutional and public realm design in the Raleigh market.
  • Supervising and mentoring team members while shaping the culture and direction of the group.
  • Participating in charrettes, public meetings, and client presentations.
  • Developing strong relationships with architects, civil engineers, planners, and community stakeholders.

Skills & Attributes

  • Proven success in leading complex institutional projects across multiple sectors.
  • Excellent design sensibility, graphic communication, and storytelling skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of landscape construction, materials, and Mid-Atlantic plant palettes.
  • Familiarity with sustainable design standards (LEED, SITES, etc.).
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a passion for practice development.
  • Strong organizational, collaboration, and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Landscape Architecture (BLA or MLA).
  • 15+ years of professional experience with increasing levels of leadership.
  • Registered Landscape Architect.
  • Demonstrated experience with project management, design leadership, and business development.
