Structural Bridge Engineer | Charlotte, NC | Raleigh, NC | Hybrid

VHB’s Structural Engineering group plays a critical role in enhancing connectivity through infrastructure projects, including complex bridge and interchange designs, rehabilitation and inspections, pedestrian walkways, and transit stations. This diverse range of services contributes to improved mobility for the traveling public.

 

As part of our strategic growth in North Carolina, VHB is seeking a Structural Engineer specializing in bridge and transportation-related design. In this position, you will play a key technical role in the planning, analysis, design, and detailing of a wide range of infrastructure projects, while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team and helping mentor junior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Support the structural planning, analysis, and design of bridge and transportation-related projects
  • Prepare and review design plans, technical specifications, load ratings, cost estimates, reports, and bid packages
  • Perform project scoping studies, alternatives analyses, and construction contract documentation
  • Conduct and review structural inspections/evaluations and associated load capacity ratings
  • Manage or assist with project planning, technical task management, and quality control
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external clients to meet project scope, schedule, and budget
  • Support proposal development and participate in business development initiatives
  • Mentor junior engineers and oversee technical work to ensure quality and accuracy 

Skills and Attributes

  • Extensive knowledge of structural engineering principles and transportation infrastructure
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing and presentations
  • Team-oriented with the ability to work independently and manage tasks effectively
  • Proficient in structural engineering software: AASHTOWare, LARSA 4D, MDX, SP Column, MerlinDASH, Mathcad
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley OpenBridge, MicroStation (v8 and Connect) is a strong plus
  • Detail-oriented with critical thinking skills and a passion for mentoring and leadership
  • Familiarity with industry standards including AASHTO and DOT design guidelines 

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of professional experience in structural bridge design, construction phasing, and transportation projects
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (structural emphasis preferred)
  • Engineering in Training (EIT) certification; PE (Professional Engineer) license preferred
  • Independent experience in bridge design and detailing (steel, concrete, prestressed concrete) and seismic analysis
