ABOUT THE POSITION

Join VHB’s New Hampshire Transportation team and help design the roadway and infrastructure projects that keep the Granite State moving. Our team partners with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, municipalities, and regional agencies to deliver innovative, context-sensitive transportation solutions that improve safety, mobility, and resilience across communities throughout the state.

Recognized as the 2024 New England Design Firm of the Year by Engineering News-Record, VHB is known for delivering forward-thinking transportation projects that balance technical excellence, sustainability, and community impact.

As a Senior Project Engineer – Highway/Roadway Design, you’ll play a key role in designing and delivering a wide variety of transportation projects across New Hampshire. You’ll contribute to roadway and highway design, drainage and stormwater systems, traffic management plans, cost estimates, and right-of-way and layout plans while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and planners.

Our projects support clients including NHDOT, municipalities, regional planning commissions, and other New England transportation agencies, helping bring to life the infrastructure that connects the places where people live, work, and recreate.

  • Provides interdisciplinary technical task management that adheres to project schedule and budget.
  • Leads and supports the design of highways and roads, including development of geometric layout, grading and drainage, utilities, complete streets elements, and environmental permitting in accordance with NHDOT and local New Hampshire standards.
  • Reviews complete project documents for interdisciplinary conformity and quality assurance.
  • Manages the development of technical design and specification documents tailored to NHDOT and New Hampshire municipal requirements.
  • Mentors junior team members by providing guidance to technical staff and reviewing their work for accuracy and conformance with applicable New Hampshire and federal standards.
  • Participates in professional and personal development, including engagement with New Hampshire professional organizations, technical committees, and local industry events.

Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects across different regions of New Hampshire.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with New Hampshire municipal staff, state agency representatives, and the public.
  • Capability to lead and mentor junior staff in a collaborative New Hampshire office environment.
  • Adept at technical task management and oversight.
  • Aptitude for public presentations, including at New Hampshire public meetings, hearings, and local board/committee sessions.

Qualifications

  • BS in Civil Engineering
  • 8–11 years minimum experience in professional transportation engineering.
  • PE required; New Hampshire PE or ability to obtain New Hampshire licensure within a reasonable timeframe preferred.
  • Must have experience with state DOT and/or regional DOT–funded municipal roadway improvement projects; direct experience with NHDOT standards, processes, and funding programs.
