Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB's Washington, D.C. office is seeking a Transit & Environmental Planning Intern to join our team for Summer 2027. Internships are designed to introduce students into the workforce by building essential professional skills through hands-on learning in a supportive yet challenging environment. The internship program is designed to round out participants' academic learning with real-world experience and help them explore related areas of practice to find the best fit for their career path.

Responsibilities 

  • Collaborate with VHB staff, clients, and consultants to advance projects in a timely manner
  • Assist with activities in support of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance projects and similar environmental review processes for transit and transportation projects
  • Assist in the development of planning solutions for transit and rail projects, including site analysis, concept development, and feasibility studies
  • Conduct research and data collection and analysis on topics pertaining to the natural and human environment
  • Assist in data mining and visualization for transit and environmental planning applications
  • Perform analysis of data or calculations related to transit ridership, environmental impacts, and other planning metrics using analytical tools such as GIS to evaluate data, identify trends, and develop documentation
  • Perform field data collection and other on-site project support activities
  • Participate in public engagement and outreach efforts, including development of public engagement materials and planning of public meetings and other stakeholder engagement activities
  • Produce supporting graphics, maps, and imagery for project deliverables
  • Summarize information collected by others and assemble reports

Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments concurrently
  • Capable of working effectively in a team environment
  • Proficiency with communication, presentation, and data analysis tools such as Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Strong computer skills, including GIS (ArcGIS preferred) and statistical analysis tools (R preferred)
  • Experience with Adobe Suite a plus

Qualifications

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in planning, engineering, environmental science, public policy, or a related field.

 

The hourly pay range for this position, located in Washington, D.C., is $19 to $30. The actual hourly rate offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted hourly range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.
