Transit and Rail Engineer – Transportation Transit & Rail | Hybrid | Philadelphia, PA or Lansdale, PA

As communities across the Northeast invest in smarter, safer, and more connected transportation systems, VHB is growing its Transit & Rail team in Pennsylvania and seeking an experienced Transit & Rail Engineer to help deliver impactful infrastructure solutions. In this hybrid role based in Philadelphia or Lansdale, you’ll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team on complex rail and bus transit projects ranging from stations and maintenance facilities to bridges, track systems, and right-of-way infrastructure. Responsibilities

  • Assist and perform design on a variety of rail projects including stations, layover/service/support facilities, bus transit, rail bridges, right-of-way infrastructure, maintenance of equipment (MOE) and maintenance of way (MOW) yards, signals and communications
  • Develop, manage, and maintain project schedules and budgets
  • Assist in development of project deliverables
  • Support the Project Development process including preparation of conceptual level designs, feasibility studies, planning studies, supporting documentation and quality control
  • Perform inspections, evaluations, and assessments of rail and transit infrastructure
  • Develop drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and project schedules
  • Prepare technical reports and analysis
  • Assist in the development of construction bid documents
  • Provide design support services during construction
  • Work effectively and collaboratively in a multi-disciplined team environment

Skills and Attributes 

  • Strong understanding of transit and rail infrastructure and multi-discipline system integration
  • Technical experience in transit and rail design disciplines (site/civil/drainage, track, bridges, structures, building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection), fire alarm, communication, security, industrial, overhead catenary, traction power, substations, signals and communications, rail systems, grade crossings)
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and analytical skills
  • Strong capability in the use of computer applications including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field of study required, Master’s degree a plus and may substitute for 1 year of experience
  • 5+ years of professional experience in transit & rail/transportation engineering design
  • Understanding of railroad and rail/bus transit design requirements (ex. client and/or AREMA and APTA recommended practices)
  • PE License
  • Amtrak, SEPTA, DRPA, PATCO, NJ Transit, and/or NY MTA project experience preferred
  • Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation CADD platform is preferred

 

The full-time annual base salary range for this position is $95,000 to $135,000 if located in Pennsylvania. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.

 

Annual base salary is one component of VHB’s Total Rewards package. In addition to base pay, eligible employees may receive annual incentive compensation bonuses, spot bonuses, and merit-based salary increases, providing opportunities to increase earnings beyond base pay.
