ABOUT THE POSITION

SENIOR TRANSPORTATION ROADWAY ENGINEER | RICHMOND, VA | VIRGINIA BEACH, VA | WILLIAMSBURG, VA | HYBRID

VHB’s Virginia offices are seeking a Senior Transportation Roadway Engineer to join our growing Transportation team. In this role, you’ll help lead the delivery of impactful roadway and multimodal transportation projects that improve mobility, connectivity, and safety for communities across the Commonwealth. Working alongside a collaborative team of engineers, planners, and designers, you’ll contribute to innovative infrastructure solutions that support sustainable growth and shape how people move through the places they live, work, and thrive.

Responsibilities include highway design, traffic management plan development, cost estimating, right-of-way and construction plan preparation, and coordination across complex transportation projects. Our clients include municipalities, VDOT and other state agencies, and private partners driving infrastructure investment throughout the region.

Responsibilities

• Perform engineering related duties as a lead project engineer including analysis and design on complex transportation projects, grading, and plan preparation
• Lead and oversee the design and production of transportation projects including highway widenings/reconstruction, intersection improvements, roundabouts, shared-use paths, and bike/pedestrian facilities
• Delegate tasks and mentor junior engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment
• Lead production of client deliverables, including construction documents, while maintaining project budgets and schedules
• Apply VHB standards and industry best practices to ensure quality control of work products
• Meet with clients to prepare and validate scopes of work and support ongoing project coordination
• Support marketing efforts through technical input for proposals and presentation materials
• Coordinate multi-disciplinary design teams, including collaboration with subconsultants
• Partner with technical specialists to resolve design challenges, coordination issues, and conflicting criteria
• Support the bidding phase through preparation of addenda/amendments and bid reviews/tabulations
• Participate in construction phase services, including field visits, responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings
• Support the professional growth and development of junior Transportation staff

Skills/Abilities

• Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and contribute in a variety of leadership and technical roles within a design team
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• MicroStation, OpenRoads, or OpenRoads Designer experience strongly preferred
• AutoCAD Civil 3D Corridor experience is a plus

Qualifications

• BS in Civil Engineering required; MS a plus
• 8+ years of professional transportation roadway engineering experience required
• PE certification required

The full-time annual base salary range for this position is $110,000 to $160,000 if located in Virginia. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.

Annual base salary is one component of VHB’s Total Rewards package. In addition to base pay, eligible employees may receive annual incentive compensation bonuses, spot bonuses, and merit-based salary increases, providing opportunities to increase earnings beyond base pay.
