ABOUT THE POSITION

Project Manager / Senior Civil Engineer – Land Engineering

Hybrid | Hauppauge, New York

VHB’s Hauppauge office is growing, and we are seeking a collaborative, client-focused Project Manager / Senior Civil Engineer to help shape the future of our Land Engineering practice across Long Island.

In this role, you will lead and contribute to complex, multidisciplinary projects that strengthen communities and advance the region’s evolving industrial, institutional, real estate, coastal, and energy markets. You will partner with clients, public agencies, and internal teams to deliver thoughtful, resilient, and implementable site/civil solutions—from early planning and entitlement through design, permitting, and construction administration.

This is an opportunity for a technically strong leader who enjoys building trusted relationships, mentoring emerging professionals, and helping grow a high-performing team in one of the region’s most dynamic markets.

Recognition That Reflects Our Commitment:

VHB is proud to be recognized for technical excellence, client service, and our people-first culture, including:

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, design, permitting, and delivery of site/civil engineering projects across Long Island and the greater New York region.
  • Develop site layout, grading, drainage, utility, erosion and sediment control, and stormwater management plans and specifications.
  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client expectations across small, medium, and large-scale assignments.
  • Collaborate with integrated teams across environmental, transportation, planning, geomatics, structural, and other disciplines to deliver comprehensive client solutions.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, municipal staff, regulatory agencies, utility providers, boards, commissions, and community stakeholders.
  • Support land development approvals and prepare permitting documentation for local, county, state, and federal agencies, as applicable.
  • Guide projects through construction administration, including coordination with contractors, clients, and design team members.
  • Mentor, coach, and provide technical and career guidance to early-career staff.
  • Help identify and pursue new opportunities, contribute to proposals, and support the continued growth of VHB’s Land Engineering practice in the Long Island marketplace.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to build credibility with clients, agencies, and project teams.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in site/civil design, including site planning, grading, utilities, stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control.
  • Experience supporting or leading projects in the real estate, institutional, industrial, coastal, and/or energy sectors.
  • A working understanding of related disciplines—such as land surveying, traffic engineering, transportation, or highway design—is a plus.
  • The ability to think critically, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong leadership instincts, attention to detail, and a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D and/or MicroStation, along with Microsoft Office applications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive civil engineering and site design experience.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license expected.
  • Demonstrated project management and direct client-management experience.
  • Familiarity with the Long Island development, permitting, and regulatory environment is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and/or MicroStation.

The full-time annual base salary range for this position is $105,000 to $145,000 if located in Long Island. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law.
