Transportation Planner/Engineer | Hybrid | Hauppauge, NY
VHB’s growing Hauppauge, NY office is looking for a Transportation Planner/Engineer to join our Transportation Planning & Operations group. The selected candidate will work with a dynamic team of transportation planners and engineers on a variety of public, private, and institutional projects within broad cross-section of markets, including real estate municipal, state agencies, higher education, federal lands, and aviation.Our team uses its skills and experience to improve our communities with a sustainable, context-driven, and integrated project delivery approach. Our clients include municipalities, DOT and other state agencies, and private partners who support the development of the places we live, work, recreate and learn.
Responsibilities
- Work with a team of multi-disciplinary professionals to develop mobility and transportation planning and engineering solutions for a multitude of transportation projects
- Conduct multi-modal transportation analyses
- Research and interpret transportation data, community statistics and demographics to assess the mobility needs of a community
- Prepare transportation impact, corridor and intersection improvement studies
- Conduct safety analysis, develop recommendations, and safety studies
- Prepare conceptual designs for roadways, intersections, pedestrian, and bicycle paths, etc.
- Participate in meetings with clients, consultant partners, and other stakeholders
- Prepare technical reports and present findings and results to clients
- Project management or serve as a task leader on small to mid-size projects
Skills and Abilities
- Experience applying transportation engineering & planning concepts, practices, and procedures
- Team oriented with the ability to manage multiple assignments and mentor junior staff

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in planning, transportation engineering or related field required, Master’s preferred (may substitute for 1 year of experience)
- 5 - 8 years professional transportation planning and/or transportation engineering experience required
- Candidates with AICP, EIT/PE, or PTOE certifications are strongly preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with AutoCAD, Synchro, ArcGIS/data management and/or HCS preferred
Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in Hauppauge, NY is $87,000 to $115,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.

Responsibilities
- Perform structural modeling, design, and oversight for bridge and other transportation infrastructure projects
- Prepare construction documents, including plans, specifications, estimates and calculation packages
- Provide technical support/mentorship to structural engineering staff

- Model-based design experience is a strong plus:

Responsibilities
- Work within a team of professionals in developing site civil engineering plans, reports, and specifications for electrical substations, solar facilities, transmission line right-of-way access, and various utility related land development projects.
- Civil engineering for substation expansions and replacements including siting, grading and drainage design, utility design, interior circulation layout, and exterior access design.
- Civil engineering for transmission line permanent and temporary gravel road access to support construction and long-term operations and maintenance including development of plans and access road profiles, stormwater management, and alternative/innovative solutions for challenging locations that require safe access.
- Preparation and/or reviewing design criteria, drawings, and specifications.
- Preparation and/or reviewing permitting, design, and construction documents.
- Reviewing geotechnical and reports.
- Coordinating with other project disciplines including structural and electrical.
- Project task financial performance, and management of small to medium projects.
- Engagement in business development and client relations.
- Technical and design report writing.
- Attending meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to establish their needs and discuss design/permitting issues.

- Expertise in site planning and layout, utility coordination and design for site substation projects including foundations, grading and drainage design, permitting, specifications, and construction administration of civil site infrastructure components.

VHB is seeking a Senior Project Manager/ Environmental Engineer / Geologist for our strong and growing Federal Site Investigation & Remediation practice. This professional will support Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) response actions for federal land managers at contaminated sites located across the United States. Response activities will include managing preliminary assessments/site inspections, engineering evaluation/cost analyses, remedial investigation/feasibility studies, removal/remedial design, removal/remedial actions, and long-term monitoring programs.
Responsibilities
- Manage effective site investigation and remediation field programs
- Collaborate with other federal practice members
- Provide occasional hands-on support during field exploration and testing
- Leverage technology to support data management and visualization
- Interpret/synthesize site investigation data
- Evaluate potential contaminant migration pathways
- Collaborate with human health and ecological risk assessors
- Evaluate applicable or relevant and appropriate requirements (ARARs)
- Effectively communicate project status and findings to clients through technical reports, correspondence, memoranda, and presentations
- Perform routine project management tasks (proposal writing, budget tracking, invoicing) and develop new project opportunities
- Mentor and possibly supervise junior team members
- Manage client relationships
- Attend and lead meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to establish their needs and discuss design/compliance issues
- Participate in professional organizations that promote relationships with clients and teaming partners
- Write technical reports, correspondence, notes, and memoranda

Qualifications

- Experience investigating and/or remediating sites subject to the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) required
- Experience writing proposals for and managing federal contracts preferred
- OSHA 40 hr. HAZWOPER certification and annual refresher certifications required
- Professional Licensure or on track to obtain (PG, PE)
- User-level experience/knowledge of GIS and environmental data management platforms (e.g., Earthsoft’s EQuIS) preferred

ABOUT THE POSITION
VHB’s Environmental Resources Group in Atlanta is offering a summer internship for an Aquatics Intern to work with our expanding ecology group. This position would begin in May 2024 and potentially extend into October 2024. The internship position would be approximately 24-32 hours per week, depending on project needs, and the work schedule would generally be Monday-Thursday with the occasional need to assist on Friday.
This position requires regular outdoor work and travel. Travel would generally consist of day trips, and overnight stays would be minimal. Additionally, some flexibility is required in terms of daily project destinations/locations and hours of availability due to weather frequently and suddenly altering plans.
Responsibilities
- Travelling to various monitoring locations to collect water samples, record in situ water quality data, and measure depths and velocities from creeks and rivers
- Assist with data entry and field equipment maintenance
- Assist with fish community surveys
- Coordinate and communicate with internal and external project team members

ABOUT THE POSITION
Role/Responsibilities – Collaborate and partner with New England Market Leaders, Managing Directors, and the New England structures teams to increase our client base and grow coastal engineering services in New England.
- Developing and maintaining strong relationships and trust with coastal engineering and resiliency focused staff in New England and throughout VHB.
- Developing and maintaining in-depth coastal market knowledge with a starting focus on client base within Massachusetts and expanding throughout the rest of VHB’s footprint. It is expected that the Director will bring significant client relationships and VHB’s leaders will work with the director to identify significant cross-selling opportunities.
- Help drive the Strategic Initiative associated with building a coastal engineering and resiliency practice which will be a significant focus of VHB as part of the 2028 strategic plan.
- Continue to develop VHB’s expertise in coastal engineering with the goal of creating a coastal engineering practice to deliver on that service. It is assumed that the Director will be responsible for identifying, pursuing and delivering coastal engineering work. The Director will also play a significant role in identifying and recruiting candidates to build the practice.
- Manage project teams responsible for delivering coastal engineering projects.

Billability & Travel Expectations:
In order to be effective in the Director of Coastal Engineering role, the individual needs to have a strong technical focus and maintain a connection to the services performed by VHB with project work. It is expected that we will work collectively on an appropriate billability target that allows appropriate time for strategy, business development and recruiting. We expect that billability to mainly come from managing select projects, senior level consulting on project work across the region and quality control work on individual projects.
Additionally, it is anticipated that the Director of Coastal Engineering will be willing and able to travel as needed, primarily within New England, to effectively build a coastal engineering team and collaborate with VHB staff and with key clients.

VHB is seeking a strong Transportation/Traffic Engineer with solid design experience to join our vibrant and growing transportation consulting practice in Connecticut. There is an option for someone to work from another VHB office to support CT projects, if meeting all qualifications.

- Develop, analyze and evaluate traffic improvements including traffic signals and roundabouts

VHB’s Washington DC team is looking for a Transportation Intern to join our Multimodal Operations & Engineering group. The selected candidate will work with a team of traffic engineers and transportation planners on a variety of public, private and institutional projects within broad cross-section of markets, including municipal, state agencies, higher education, federal lands and aviation.
Responsibilities
- Working within a team of professionals in developing traffic and transportation planning and engineering solutions for a multitude of multimodal transportation projects
- Developing sign, pavement marking, and traffic signal design plans in MicroStation

Transportation Engineer | Raleigh, NC
VHB’s growing Raleigh, NC office is looking for a Transportation Engineer to join our Traffic Operations group. The selected candidate will work with a team of transportation planners and engineers on a variety of public, private, and institutional projects within broad cross-section of markets, including municipal, state agencies, higher education, and federal agencies.
Responsibilities
- Serve as Task Manager or Project Manager on traffic engineering and planning projects
- Prepare and/or lead traffic impact and safety studies
- Complete traffic operational improvement studies for localized intersections and corridors
- Provide analyses of traffic safety issues and crash reduction measures
- Work with a team of professionals in a variety of transportation-related areas to develop mobility solutions which consider all users integrating Complete Street concepts within urban and suburban communities

VHB’s team in Raleigh, NC is seeking a skilled Transportation Planner to join our Safety Team. This is a unique opportunity to work in a hybrid role with a dynamic team across diverse disciplines, providing exposure to an array of projects varying in size and scope. - Support with authorship and development of project-related documentation for a range of transportation safety planning studies for local, regional, and State agencies
- Conduct planning assessments using analytical tools such as GIS to evaluate data, identify trends, and develop documentation to summarize results and recommendations
